The urban centre, on the slopes of Monte Albino, was already frequented in Roman times (the crypt of the Abbey of S. Maria Maddalena in Armillis holds the remains of a villa dating back to the 2nd century AD). It presents the typical traits of centers dedicated to agriculture; the houses, grouped around a courtyard which is often accessed through important portals, artistically worked in the local stone of Vesuvius, welcome visitors every year during the event “The Courtyards of History”. On this occasion, the courtyards revive ancient crafts, whose performances are accompanied by traditional music and local food and wine dishes.
Also interesting for understanding the history of the town is the “Historical Procession”, which recalls the election of the Mayor which was made for the first time in 1500.
